Zoom In! – Japanese-German Energy Transition Talks: Critical Minerals for the Energy Transition
25. Oktober 2023, Online
“Zoom In! – Japanese-German Energy Transition Talks” is a series jointly organized by the Japanese-German Energy Partnership Team and the German-Japanese Energy Transition Council (GJETC) on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK). The third session will focus on "Critical Minerals for the Energy Transition" and the challenges associated with establishing and maintaining reliable, sustainable and resilient supply chains. Critical minerals such as copper, lithium, nickel, cobalt and rare earths are essential ingredients in many of today's fast-growing clean energy technologies - from solar panels, wind turbines, electrolysers and power grids to batteries in electric vehicles. Demand for rare minerals is growing rapidly as the clean energy transition gains momentum in both Germany and Japan.
The German government already adopted a raw materials strategy in 2020. Japan similarly published an international resources strategy in the same year. However, due to Russia's war against Ukraine and geopolitical shifts the circumstances have changed significantly since then, so that the issue has become even more central to current policy debates. Against this background, Japan and the EU have already agreed on a strategic partnership earlier this year to work more closely together on security and supply chain issues.
The expert speakers in this webinar will be Dr. Sven-Uwe Schulz, Head of Unit "Evaluation of Mineral Resources" and Deputy Head of German Mineral Resources Agency (DERA) as well as a representative from JOGMEC, who will provide insights on raw materials strategies in Germany/Europe and Japan, respectively.
We are looking forward to your participation!
