Scaling up Green Hydrogen Production in Korea and Germany

“Let’s talk Transition! Exploring the Energy Transition in Korea and Germany” is a series organised by the Korean-German Energy Partnership Team on behalf of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK). It focuses on current developments regarding the energy transition in both countries. Each session covers a specific topic and provides decision-makers from policy, industry and research a platform for in-depth information and discussion on the current status, development and potential for different energy transition policies and technologies in Germany and Korea.

The third session will focus on green hydrogen production in Germany and Korea. Both countries have committed to ambitious decarbonisation targets, while having large industrial sectors where emissions are difficult to abate. To achieve their net-zero targets, Korea and Germany plan to use green hydrogen to decarbonise not only the industry but also other sectors such as mobility and energy. Therefore, the projected hydrogen demand for Germany and Korea is expected to rise to 2-4 megatons and 4 megatons respectively by 2030. In order to meet this demand, both countries have committed themselves to expanding their domestic production of low-carbon hydrogen.

This session will highlight the current state of hydrogen production in both countries, and examine the technologies and infrastructure developments driving these efforts. The webinar will also address the challenges and opportunities associated with scaling up domestic green hydrogen production in Korea and Germany.
