German-Chinese Relations: Outlook 2020 - Diminished Expectations or Sign of Recovery?

2019 has been an eventful year for the Chinese economy. The trade conflict between China and the United States as well as a lower growth forecast have unsettled the world economy over the past year and stressed the importance of a clear and united stance towards China by Germany and the EU.

In 2020 the German government leaves no doubt about the importance it attaches on China as a partner. For one Germany has announced to host the first EU -China summit with the participation of all 28 Heads of State and Government in the course of holding the European Council Presidency during the second half of 2020.
At this summit the EU aims at finalizing the investment agreement with China, which would signal a significant step in economic relation with China since it targets, inter alia, lower market entry barriers and greater legal certainty for market access on both sides.
